YWCA After School Homework Clubs
Afterschool Homework Club Programs @ Grandview & Memorial Park
The mission of After School Homework Clubs is to provide a safe and enriching environment for students in grades kindergarten through fifth to complete their homework. YWCA Carlisle operates two Afterschool Homework Clubs in Carlisle, one at Grandview Court (open first to residents of this housing complex) and the other at Memorial Park (open for area residents). Each site meets Monday-Thursday directly after school until 5:30 p.m. and is limited to 16 students.
In addition to homework assistance, this program aims to provide additional opportunities for growth in math, reading, and writing skills. Each day, the children are offered a healthy snack and an activity that ranges from group games and art projects to life skill lessons focused on teamwork, respect, and conflict resolution.
Homework Club is coordinated and directed by the Youth Director and staffed primarily with area college students. This leadership provides a wonderful mentoring connection for these students and communities with individuals in higher education. A variety of volunteers from Carlisle High School, Dickinson College, and the community help to provide further support and tutorial services. As an incentive for regular attendance, good behavior, and homework completion, students earn holiday prizes and field trips. Additional rewards are given to good report cards.
Students must register in advance for these programs each year. For information on enrollment or how you can help at these programs, please contact Amy Lowther, Youth Director at 243-3818.
