GirlPower!

Girl Power was originally created by The Department of Health and Human Services as a prevention program for potentially at risk, adolescent girls and addresses the significant correlation between sexual assault and drug & alcohol abuse. It was further developed by YWCA as a leadership development program that promotes resiliency, healthy decision making, and encouarges both personal and academic achievement.

YWCA Carlisle currently offers four GirlPower! groups for middle and high school girls in the Carlisle Area School District (2 at Lamberton, 1 at Wilson, 1 at the high school as a club).  Although it is open to all 7th-12th grade girls, referrals are made by school staff members and parent/guardians.  Each group meets during school time and special monthly afterschool and evening events are planned to enhance our members’ experience and growth.  Some past events include volunteering with Project Share and creating a craft show to raise money for girls to go to school in Africa.  Guest speakers on topics like Drugs and Alcohol Abuse and Healthy Relationships are also included to complement the program.  Special field trips and parties are earned by GirlPower! members for positive personal and academic achievements.

During the spring of 2011, a new initiative related to GirlPower! called Life, Inc., will begin.  This program will expose adolescent girls to career choices as well as focus on personal goal setting regarding post-high school planning Dates and times to be finalized.

All groups are facilitated by YWCA’s Youth Director and YWCA’s Hallmark Program Director.
